Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has been exploring plans for his new headquarters and practice facility with the same architect who designed the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
Bryan Trubey is the director of Dallas-based architect HKS’ sports and entertainment division.

Along with AT&T Stadium, he’s worked on sports facilities including the new Minnesota Vikings’ stadium and the FC Stadium in Liverpool, England.

A graduate of Texas A&M, Trubey is helping an architecture class at the university examine concepts for the Mavericks’ planned Dallas practice and office complex.

Several teams of students are competing with proposals.

“It’s not like the students’ work will get built, but the client’s insights are invaluable to the students’ education,” said Professor Michael O’Brien who was on hand when the students, Cuban and Trubey recently got a first look at their proposals. “We appreciate Mr. Cuban’s time, which is quite valuable.”

The teams of students drew up designs for the Mavericks’ new complex, which Cuban has said he hopes to build within a couple of years.

Cuban has said that with the new training complex he’d like to “try to do something that also advances the game for the city of Dallas.”

The mixed-use development is planned to include a variety of features along with the training center, including a team store, public cafe, a museum and theater, and outdoor plazas with water features.

Cuban has said he wants to keep the development in the downtown area.

A couple of the development sites that were included in the A&M planning exercise are located along the Trinity River at the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge.

One of the proposed locations is on Riverfront Boulevard, and the other was at Trinity Groves in West Dallas.

Both vacant properties are for sale.

Cuban also owns a 3.5-acre development tract near the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center on Lamar Street.

O’Brien said that his classes have previously done design competitions for proposed health-care facilities and corporate offices. He said Cuban had a lot of give and take with the architecture students.

“He was up and at ‘em,” O’Brien said. “He’s a high-energy guy.”

The Mavericks now practice in facilities in the basement of American Airlines Center arena.

And the team’s offices are in a building in Deep Ellum east of downtown.

Cuban has said that with the new training complex he’d like to “try to do something that also advances the game for the city of Dallas.”

Teams of students in the A&M class will be working on the Mavericks’ project for several months and present their final proposals to Cuban and Trubey at the end of the semester.
