A&M athletic department brings in hefty revenue for 2015-16 academic year

Even a tumultuous 2015 football season couldn't stop Texas A&M and its athletic department from bringing in millions of dollars.

A&M's football team produced $69.6 million of net revenue for the 2015-16 academic year and helped the athletic department make $57.2 million, according to an NCAA financial report released by the university on Wednesday.

Athletics raised a little more than $194 million in total revenue while spending approximately $137.1 million. No money from student fees was allocated to athletics.

A&M's eight-win football campaign that ended with the transfers of its top two quarterbacks brought in $41.7 million in ticket sales and $99.5 million in total operating revenue. The report produced by an independent auditor and given to the NCAA also shows $32.8 million was contributed to the football program.

The Aggies also made $28.7 million in media rights and received $8.7 million from the SEC. That does not include money generated from the conference's media contracts.

A&M's baseball team turned a profit of $1.67 million. Men's basketball, the only sport besides football to receive money for media revenue, tallied a loss of $134,935. Women's basketball, the 2011 national champions, had a deficit of $3.84 million, the most of any A&M program.

Other tidbits:

-- Baseball ticket sales were second among program teams with $2.5 million in revenue. In women's sports, basketball led the way in ticket revenue with $636,147.

-- Softball trailed football in both total contributions ($4.8 million) and net revenue ($3.2 million). The A&M board of regents approved the construction of a $28.6 million softball stadium in April 2016.

-- Football only used 77.3 of its allowed 85 scholarships during the 2015-16 academic year.

-- Coaching salaries, benefits and bonuses paid by university totaled $23,054,315. The majority of that resulted from football, which makes up $6.3 million of that amount.
