I think we skipped a year or two, but now that the doldrums of summer are officially here, the tradition here at AggieYell is for all real music fans to undertake the Trout Mask Replica Challenge.
Background: Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band's 1969 album Trout Mask Replica is a double album that is considered one of the single best albums ever created. Fashioned as a rock and roll version of Ornette Coleman's Free Jazz album, Trout Mask Replica routinely is rated among the best albums in history.
Fans of the album include Matt Groening (creator of The Simpsons) and Marc Maron (comedian and host of WTF! Podcast), both of who say the album was a HUGE influence on them.
Produced by Frank Zappa, Trout Mask Replica required months of nonstop rehearsal leading up to a single recording session to complete this masterpiece.
In order to conquer the Trout Mask Replica Challenge, you must:
-Listen to the entire album in its entirety in a single listening session (the album playtime is ~78 minutes in total)
-You must be LISTENING to the album actively, not having it playing in the background while you are doing other tasks. You have to LISTEN for it to count.
-Extra points given if you listen with high fidelity headphones
-Extra EXTRA points given if you acquire a vinyl copy for the Challenge
As an added bonus for you for this year's Challenge, here is a video of a composer who gives a full breakdown and analysis of the first track of the album, the hit song Frownland. In the video, he charts all four instruments on the album (guitars, bass, and drums) showing you the sheet music and repeating patterns, time signatures, and key, specifically pointing out that the song structure is quite in-depth and brilliantly composed.
