Just when Texas was probably wondering what else could happen, mascot Bevo XIV will miss Saturday's AT&T Red River Rivalry with a serious illness.

In a statement released Wednesday, the school said the 2,100-pound national champion grand show steer has "a life-threatening condition still being explored by his veterinarians."

Bevo XIV, which carries an 82-inch horn span, has been Texas' mascot since the beginning of the 2004 season. With Bevo XIV, Texas has gone 106-41 with 10 bowl appearances and a 5-6 record against Oklahoma in Dallas. It also made an appearance at President George W. Bush's inauguration in January 2005.

"Bevo is a fighter, a symbol of strength and who fans across the world care deeply about," said Ricky Brennes, the executive director of the Silver Spurs Alumni Association which oversees the animal's care. "We are carefully monitoring Bevo's condition at this time and will update the public as we find out more about his condition."
